Why Angela Says Medicaid Does Matter:
I lost my job from a local university in August 2008. I have two young sons and one has serious asthma. So I was immediately concerned about losing my health care. I called MCHP the day after I was laid off and signed up my kids. I didn’t think I was qualified for any coverage myself, but when I got a call from MCHP, I was told I qualified for Medical Assistance to Families from the July 2008 expansion.
Finding out I was covered under the new expansion worked out perfectly with me, since I was able to start my coverage, and my sons’ coverage under MCHP, right after my previous employer-sponsored health insurance ended. So I didn’t have any lapse in health care. It has been a blessing.
Since my sons and I have health care, we can focus on the other aspects of our lives, like school, or this new business I have started up making fortune cookies. I have two masters’ degrees and am working hard to try to make this business successful.
I am very fortunate that things worked out the way they did, since it alleviated so much stress and anxiety that comes with not having health care. I have met people who are not as lucky as I am, since they have no dependents and cannot currently get Medicaid coverage even though they’ve been laid off too. I realized just how privileged I was to qualify for coverage.
It’s important for people to be able to be healthy and to get care when they need it, because healthy people can do more and get work more easily. I think it’s really important for Maryland to continue to help people who need health care.
